Non-governmental organizations (NGOs) play a strategic role in empowering rural communities, particularly in regions characterized by high levels of social, economic, and environmental vulnerability. This article aims to analyze the role of Komnas Desa of Southeast Sulawesi in rural community empowerment through the perspective of integrated functionalism as proposed by Bronislaw Malinowski. This study employs a qualitative approach, utilizing field observations, in-depth interviews, and documentation analysis conducted through field-based academic activities. The findings reveal that Komnas Desa Southeast Sulawesi adopts a participatory approach rooted in the local socio-cultural context in implementing programs related to economic empowerment, environmental advocacy, public health, and disaster management. From the perspective of integrated functionalism, these programs function as interconnected components within the social system that collectively address the fundamental needs of rural communities. The application of functionalist and applied anthropological perspectives enables NGO interventions to become more adaptive to local conditions, socially accepted by community members, and effective in strengthening local capacities. This study highlights the importance of integrating anthropological theory into community empowerment practices as a sustainable strategy for addressing social and environmental challenges in rural areas.
