While research regarding model selection for entering international markets encompasses numerous factors and dimensions, thorough reviews that completely integrate this knowledge within the framework of family businesses are still scarce. To address this gap, the study systematically examines 50 research articles and offers a current literature review covering around three decades (1998–2026) utilizing the PRISMA framework along with the Theory–Context–Characteristics–Methodology (TCCM) framework. This research seeks to explore: (i) the theories that elucidate how factors impact entry mode selection in family businesses, (ii) the contexts (i.e., industry and nation) in which the original studies took place, (iii) the attributes or factors (i.e., independent, moderator, and dependent variables) that clarify entry mode choices in family enterprises, and (iv) the methodologies used to investigate the related research domain. Drawing from this review, this study establishes a future research agenda pertaining to every aspect of the TCCM framework. This research presents a thorough framework that offers direction for scholars to explore: In what ways do "distinct attributes of family businesses" serve as moderating factors affecting the international market penetration strategies of family firms?
