Abstract

An earthquake is an event that causes the earth to shake, caused by the collision of tectonic plates, fault activity, volcanic activity, or rockfalls. SMPN 3 Medan is a school located in the city center with a densely populated residential area, which would be a crucial location in the event of an unwanted disaster such as an earthquake. However, this school does not yet have an adequate preparedness system. The main problem is the lack of knowledge and skills among students in mitigating and handling the initial stages of earthquake disasters in the school environment. The purpose of this study is to determine the effect of knowledge and preparedness attitudes of students at SMPN 3 Medan after receiving earthquake disaster education. Earthquake disaster education is the implementation of a problem-solving plan used to address the low knowledge and preparedness attitudes of students. The research method used is quantitative with a Pre-Experimental Design using the One-Group Pre-test Post-test Design model. The population for this study is all students in class VIII K, with a sample size of 32 students selected using the total sampling technique. The instrument for this research is a closed questionnaire consisting of 5 knowledge questions and 10 attitude questions with a Likert scale. Data analysis is done using univariate and bivariate analysis with the chi-square test. The research results showed that there was an increase in the average knowledge score from 1.97 to 2.78 after the counselling, with p=0.0001, indicating a significant effect on the improvement of students' knowledge. Additionally, there was an average change in attitude score from 2.25 to 2.84 after the counselling, with p=0.006, indicating a significant effect of the counselling on students' attitude changes. The conclusion of this study is that earthquake disaster education is effective in increasing students' knowledge and shaping their preparedness attitudes toward the risk of earthquake disasters.
